A more sustainable fashion system: is digital disruption fuelling positive change?

The digital space is disrupting the way the fashion supply chain – which contributes to the second biggest polluting industry in the world – communicates. Some players are now using digital technology to their advantage as they build more sustainable businesses whilst reducing waste, as they seek to cut out traditional road blocks that lead to clunky and often complex supply chains, and waste in the production process.

Today, we are witnessing a rapid rise in digital tools and open-source information that is disrupting traditional processes and incubating positive change. Tech-savvy and forward-thinking designers are using the digital space to connect with multi-level stakeholders in new ways. For them, the supply chain is experiencing greater acceleration and flexibility, driven principally by better communication between designers and makers that allows for dynamic collaboration and more sustainable production. And for those designers weaving digital into their supply chains, the rewards mean better stories for their ever more astute customers – from where, how and by whom the clothes were made.

When it comes to promoting sustainability, can digital help to transform dedicated sustainable fashion brands into successful, moneymaking businesses? Is digital the support that emerging sustainable fashion brands have been waiting for?
