The 3% Mountain

The 3% Mountain was a 6m high installation of creatively displayed secondhand clothes that represented a mere 3% of the average textile waste going into Hong Kong’s landfill on a daily basis that was from 16th to 22nd June, 2011 located at the Star Ferry, Hong Kong. The 3% Mountain put the scale of Hong Kong’s textile waste into perspective and proved to be a highly impactful community awareness project that, with the avid support of many celebrities, resulted in widespread media coverage and discussion on sustainable disposal of clothing.
The 3% Mountain was launched to expectant guests attending our Forever Better with Miele fashion show.
We loved it because the installation created such a powerful visual impact of secondhand clothing, much of which was in very good condition, that demonstrated the excsses of over-consumption yet in a beautifully unexpected way.
