EcoChic Jakarta

EcoChic Jakarta contained 15 of Indonesia’s most influential designers and eight Hong Kong designers who shared the catwalk at the Four Seasons Hotel in Jakarta on 3rd March 2008 to demonstrate one-off symbolic pieces in order to raise awareness about environmental sustainability. Designers’ environmentally-inspired outfits were made from a wide range of materials, including recycled materials, such as glass, tin-foil, plastic and copper to salvaged flood-damaged fabrics that would otherwise have been discarded. Other designers paid homage to the revival of Indonesia’s batik, a meticulously designed fabric that embodies a wealth of Indonesian social and cultural values.
We loved it because the show acted as a catalyst for Indonesian designers to rethink and recreate garments that embodied broader statements about environmental sustainability in Indonesia, the world’s third largest carbon emitter.
