Redress’ Education Director, Kay Liu was invited to present at Interfilière Shanghai on 27 September 2018 where she gave a talk named ‘Undressing Waste’s Issues’.
It’s estimated the fashion and textiles industry sees a loss of over US$500 billion per year through the take-make-dispose production and consumption model, and less than 1% of used clothing is currently being recycled back into new. This economic loss is coupled with significant negative impact in our environment and society. An enormous 80% of the environmental impact is decided at the design stage, therefore, there is a huge opportunity for bringing more sustainable products to market via ‘better’ design. This presentation explored, through the lens of circularity in fashion, how we can deploy tools and strategies to unlock the value of waste.
