DRIVING CIRCULARITY IN FASHION THROUGH EDUCATION 2021 edition of open-access Redress Design Award Pathway Course now opens for registration

Organised by environmental NGO Redress with Create Hong Kong of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as the Lead Sponsor, the world’s largest sustainable fashion design competition, the Redress Design Award proudly celebrates a decade of education to drive circularity in the fashion system with a report on its educational impact, including some 50,000 individuals reached through its activities across the years.

The Redress Design Award additionally kicks off its 2021 competition cycle with an exciting new edition of its Pathway Course, a two-week circular and sustainable fashion design curriculum free to all designers and now open for registration.

Redress Design Award 2019 First Prize winner Maddie Williams has designed a sustainable puffer jacket in collaboration with less by JNBY Group, one of Mainland China’s largest fashion houses. The jacket is now retailing in over 100 stores across the country.

Redress, the leading environmental NGO working to reduce fashion waste, commissioned a study “Clothing Consumption, Usage and Disposal Habits in Hong Kong” to reveal that two in five Hong Kongers only hold onto clothing for one year or less and nearly a third discard unwanted clothing items in the rubbish, contributing to the approximately 196 tonnes of clothing that enters Hong Kong's landfills every day.*

Environmental NGO, Redress, reveals the signature looks of the Redress Design Award 2020 Finalists in advance of the 10th anniversary digital Grand Final on 3 September where winners will be announced online to a global audience. The earth elements-themed photoshoot, styled and shot by two leading Hong Kong creatives Kieran Ho and Karl Lam, presents five womenswear and five menswear finalists showcasing a varied range of creative solutions to transform fashion’s waste. The 32 talented designers – separated, for the first time into menswear and womenswear categories – represent the future of the fashion industry, ready to apply their skills to solving the fashion crisis and shifting the $2.4 billion(1) industry towards a circular economy. The Redress Design Award provides emerging designers with a platform to demonstrate solutions to tackle the fashion crisis with a focus on textile waste. NGO Redress and TV director Lindsay Robertson launched the fourth season of Frontline Fashion, an award-winning docu-series featuring emerging designers fighting fashion’s waste. Set in Hong Kong, the epicenter of Asia’s fast growing yet polluting fashion industry, Frontline Fashion’s bite-sized episode format delivered via YouTube brings solutions to fashion’s environmental crisis to global audiences.

Leading environmental NGO Redress opened the Redress Design Award 2020, the 10th cycle of the world’s largest sustainable fashion design competition alongside its new Circular Fashion Design Pathway Course, with lead sponsorship from Hong Kong government agency, Create Hong Kong. These milestones come as Redress continues to fight fashion’s alarming - and worsening - waste rates by educating fashion designers globally about waste-reducing circular design techniques. For the first time, the competition offers two prize categories, menswear and womenswear, with career-changing winners’ prizes provided by The R Collective and VF Corporation.

Hong Kong - Environmental NGO Redress completed their biggest ‘Get Redressed Month’ to date which saw public awareness adverts across the MTR, the creation of a brand new school resources pack and online resource hub, and 118 companies, clubs and schools hosting a total of 187 collection points for unwanted clothing across Hong Kong. The campaign has turned October into the official month to take action against textile waste and aims to make clothes recycling accessible and transparent, whilst tackling the issue of over-consumption through public engagement activities.
