To encourage consumer participation in driving sustainability in fashion, we invited the public to have their say on which of the 30 Redress Design Award Semi-finalists could best influence the future of the industry. Among them, a fan favourite has emerged: Indian designer Pavneet Kaur is the Redress Design Award 2023 People’s Choice winner who is now fast-tracked to the Grand Final!
Pavneet’s womenswear collection, ‘EUTOPIA’, is inspired by the solarpunk movement, which imagines visually bright ecological utopias. Her collection upcycles discarded turbans from Sikh men and cut-and-sew waste patched and appliquéd together, creating classic silhouettes that will remain in style and promote longevity as wardrobe staples. The material from the turbans, made of cotton and silk, are double- and triple-layered for durability. Through her collection, Pavneet hopes to give fair employment opportunities to local expert artisans and preserve the arts and crafts heritage of her native India.
Pavneet shares, “It’s always been exciting to work with waste, exploring different innovative design solutions that challenge traditional practices and inspire a more conscious approach to fashion consumption.”
As the People’s Choice Award winner, Pavneet will also receive a JUKI overlock sewing machine and a digital copy of the Bloomsbury book Historical Perspectives on Sustainable Fashion.
Pavneet’s Redress Design Award 2023 collection will debut in the Grand Final Fashion Show in September, together with the nine other Finalists. Don’t miss it!
