Redress is delighted to announce the launch of its latest Takeback partnership in Hong Kong with French fashion concept store, rue Madame. From this month, members of the public can take their unwanted used clothing to one of three participating rue Madame stores in Hong Kong and drop it in the collection box. Collected clothing is first sorted before being redistributed, resold or, if absolutely necessary, recycled by Redress to increase the lifespan of the textile or maximise its inherent value.
The box accepts men’s, women’s and children’s clothing as well as accessories. We ask that people wash everything first and do not include any shoes, textiles or mouldy items which could affect other items in the box.
As an organisation dedicated to reducing the fashion industry's negative environmental impact, Redress programmes enable consumers to embrace and enter the circular economy. Takeback is one such programme providing a very visible and accessible way for these consumers to give away their unwanted clothing, and ensure it does not end in our rapidly expanding landfills prematurely.
Transparency around what happens to the collected clothing is very important to us. While some clothes are resold at our pop-up shops or through our sales platforms such as Vestiaire Collective (link), to raise funds for our work, much of it is sorted and redistributed to charities. We always try to keep the clothing in use for as long as possible to avoid the clothes redistributed by us ending up in landfill in Hong Kong or abroad. Clothes that have reached the end of their ‘wearable’ life (old underwear/socks, really worn out/stained items) are very difficult for us to deal with. While some recycling options do exist, shredding old clothes to make new fibres, downcycling clothes into rags and insulation, and energy recovery, none provides a truly circular solution at scale. Currently the available solutions to us in Hong Kong include The Billie System, and downcycled into RPF pellets with a local recycler. Clothes that are in very poor condition and made from a material that cannot be reused or recycled, such as PVC, are sent to landfill.
By making it easier for people to dispose of unwanted clothing in a conscious way, our aim is to normalise the circular fashion economy and give consumers ways of keeping clothing in use for longer.
