Congratulations to Hong Kong’s Tiger Chung for winning the Redress Design Award 2024! The prize package includes a career-changing opportunity to join the Tommy Hilfiger team on a sustainable design project for retail, creating a broader impact for the industry and consumers. Plus, the First Prize winner also receives a development fund of HK50,000 (US$6,400) to propel their sustainable fashion career.
“I can’t believe that I’ve won! This is a huge opportunity to showcase circular solutions on a global stage,” shared winner Tiger Chung, whose competition collection ‘The Wanderer’ tapped into waste streams such as car seat covers and discarded sofas. “Fashion is rightly criticised for its negative environmental impact, which is a huge concern for designers like myself. But we intend to change this — and make fashion better for the planet.”
To win the competition, Tiger and nine other Finalists outshined hundreds of emerging designers applying from around the world. Following that, they faced a gruelling judging process, with criteria including creativity and sustainability, including use of circular design techniques and strategies. Their collections were judged by a panel of ten esteemed global sustainable fashion experts, including Orsola de Castro, Author and Co-founder, Fashion Revolution; Kévin Germanier, Creative Director, GERMANIER and Alum, Redress Design Award; and Xiao Xue, former Editor-in-Chief of Elle China, Author, and Fashion Opinion Leader. The judges stayed at the Mondrian Hong Kong while they put the Finalists through their paces during the nerve-wracking Grand Final Week of the competition.
Tiger, who also won the Hong Kong Best Prize, and the other Finalists of the competition, including runner-up Tian Ruyin from Mainland China, People’s Choice winner Silvia Acien Parrilla from the UK, now join the Redress Alumni Network, which offers ongoing career guidance, connections, and opportunities in sustainable fashion to over 300 Alumni designers around the world. With diverse circular design talents and solutions, these creatives are at the forefront of a new breed of fashion designers prioritising sustainability and circularity as much as desirability.
